WHAT IS THE IDEAL SPACE YOU'RE TRYING TO CREATE FOR YOUR GUESTS HERE AT INTERCONTINENTAL SINGAPORE?
For us, what is important is to create a home away from home. We recognize that travel is now more than just staying in a hotel, it should be an experience that replicates a home.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO WORK WITH SCENE SHANG IN CREATING THIS SPACE?
Honestly one big element is being a fan of your furniture. We kind of looked into what brand we would like to team up with. For us, paramount was that it had to be a local brand. The pieces of furniture that you create all have a history and a heritage to it.
Also, our hotel is very heavily influenced by the Peranakan theme and the themes and designs of your furniture reminiscent this art deco, golden age of travel, that’s why we thought it would be a great fit; that’s equally what we’re trying to replicate, you come to Singapore, and it should be nearly stepping back in time and having an experience of a lifetime.
So far, the feedback we get from guests is that it doesn’t feel like a hotel, and that’s the intention. We didn’t want to create just a hotel room, we wanted to create an experience, a home away from home. When you step in there, you could be in someone’s home; it’s comfortable and timeless.

DO YOU THINK HERITAGE AND CULTURE ARE IMPORTANT TO CREATE A SENSE OF PLACE IN A SPACE?
I think it matters enormously. Nowadays, if it’s a home or a hotel, you come into the space to relax. The design of the room being reminiscent of traditional Singapore, our wooden shutters with your rattan furniture, the texture of leather, everything blends in quite nicely.

HOW DO YOU MAKE YOUR OWN SPACE A COMFORTABLE SANCTUARY FOR YOU TO WIND DOWN ESPECIALLY SINCE YOU'RE IN THE HOSPITALITY BUSINESS?
I’ve been in the hotel business for 25 years, every hotel room around the world looks the same. For me what is important is, when I come home, having furniture and surroundings that I feel comfortable with. I want to have clean lines, textures and fabrics that I personally like. Using nice natural fabric for the floor and rich velvet or leather for seating, it’s a nice feeling, it’s very relaxing. I like contemporary design, but I equally like the local influence.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE PIECE OF FURNITURE? CAN YOUR DESCRIBE IT AND WHY?
We have a traditional wedding cabinet, because it’s reminiscent of Asia. We also love our SCENE SHANG tables; the marble tables with the brass stand that is dotted throughout the house, because my wife and I are huge fans of art deco and the design of it is nice and timeless and also multi-functional – from putting flowers to fishes.
