Funded and built by the Hokkien community, and philanthropists like Tan Kah Kee and the Haw Par Brothers, the building began life as a Chinese school. Wishing to advance traditional education into a more modern mindset, combining the best schooling methods of East and West, the founders also showed openness towards Western influence, designing the building in Art Deco style.
That progressive spirit endures to this day; trading blackboards for canvases, and lessons for performances, the building serves as an enclave for artists and creative businesses today.
Sentimental. Beautiful. Iconic. These beautiful Art Deco buildings form an indelible part of Singapore’s cultural heritage, built during a time we were hopeful and idealistic, striving to make our mark on the world.
In a tribute to these storied landmarks still standing today, EMBRACE ME Cushion Covers reimagines their glory days in exuberant hues. Ready for fresh attention and a new appreciation, they are an invitation to embrace our architectural treasures, in every sense of the word.
