Built in the 1930s, the first public housing estate in Singapore is also her only Art Deco housing estate. Combining the modern-for-its-time Streamline Moderne style with local Straits Settlements features, the buildings incorporated long horizontal lines and curving forms with light and air wells and spiral staircases. Every block has a unique design, and at four storeys, Block 82 stood one of the tallest.
Aptly, since this was the heady thirties, the estate was also known as Mei Ren Wo, or Den of Beauties, seeing how it was the neighborhood of choice for rich businessmen to house their mistresses.
Step back in time as you wander the narrow lanes today. You’ll find you can order a latte just as easily as you can a cup of kopi C.
Sentimental. Beautiful. Iconic. These beautiful Art Deco buildings form an indelible part of Singapore’s cultural heritage, built during a time we were hopeful and idealistic, striving to make our mark on the world.
In a tribute to these storied landmarks still standing today, EMBRACE ME Cushion Covers reimagines their glory days in exuberant hues. Ready for fresh attention and a new appreciation, they are an invitation to embrace our architectural treasures, in every sense of the word.
