Long before Raffles arrived in Singapore in 1819, a long history of foreign trade was already established. Ming Dynasty blue and white porcelain from the 16th to 17th century were found in the Kallang River, indicating the presence of foreign trade.

In return for precious Chinese porcelain, Singapore, then known as Temasek, would supply Chinese traders with rare hornbill casques and high quality lakawood.

Some of the traded porcelain may have been known as Swatow ware - a style of Ming Dynasty ware intended for the Southeast Asian market. The style was vibrant and spontaneous, where birds, animals, trees, flowers, water and landscapes were painted freehand. Some of these artworks also depicted trading ships.

The 1818 Collection employs this vibrant and spontaneous style to illustrate scenery depicting local legends from Sang Nila Utama, the Dragon’s Teeth Gate and the Legend of Red Hill, set amongst local flora and fauna, some of which can still be found thriving in Singapore today.

Hidden within the scenes, one may also find icons from contemporary Singapore, creating a subtle sense of wonder in relation to time, history and culture.

Home to a flourishing Asian film scene, it was the first cinema to screen American and British movies. It was also popular for its air-conditioned theater, the first of its kind and a technological wonder in tropical Singapore.

A red light beckoning seafarers in the dark. To some, it meant hope, for it announced the landing point for immigrants in search of better prospects. To others, it served as a beacon, guiding mariners returning from commercial ventures. This eponymous lamp gave the pier its local name, Hong Deng Ma Tou (红灯码头) or the Red Lamp Pier. Immigrants and sailors soon became day-trippers and pilgrims as, years later, travellers launched off for the Southern Islands here.

The Straits Chinese or Peranakan style is a blend of Chinese, Malay, European and colonial elements which flourished from the late 19^th century to World War II. Rich in detail and built with care, the style has humble beginnings. It first appeared in simple shop houses where tradesmen toiled, and was only later adopted in the elaborate terraces homes of wealthy merchant families. It was common for the original owners of these houses to inscribe, above the windows, either their name or the name of the village in China that they came from. This collection of doors and windows is an attempt to preserve the beauty of Peranakan architecture in an artistic three-dimensional form. The windows themselves are limited in originals, hand painted by Arthur P Y Ting with abstract collages as the background.
